Title: Setting Up Shop Posted on: Monday, 24 October 2011 |

I dislike, with a burning hatred of loathing, the cheap 'modern' furniture that furniture shops try to palm off on you. You know, the ones where you're supposed to get great deals, but the stuff is all made in China & one good boot to the table sees it shattering on the floor. Not that you should be kicking tables. With me setting up shop in either Sydney or Orange - I promise to make a choice this week - I needed furniture. And because I think the cheap modern gear - which, lemme point out, is a misnomer. It isn't cheap. They just tell you that price is cheap. And that everyone has white sofa's these days. What happens the first time you spill your Millers on it huh? Aint gonna be white no more. Anyways, I think the cheap modern stuff looks passé & gauche so I trawled an antique shop. Here's what I bought: Edwardian dining chairs. Red leather on the seat & back, with brass studs holding them in place. They remind me so much of Game of Thrones. I can just see Ned Stark slouched in one. Round dining table (so I can make Knights of the Round Table jokes obvs) The table is not Edwardian, it looks more 60's to me as the legs dovetail down into a common 60's design. Lounge room set. 1960's 3 seater sofa, ottoman, Grandfather & Grandmother chairs. The arms of all chairs have this beautiful, intricate fretwork that's very retro. I want a crochet rug to go over the back of the sofa - cause really I'm 85 - & my bestie Lydia got me some awesome cushions that'll look beautiful on these babies. I also have a 1960's coffee table that will fit beautifully between these. I saw the Grandfather & Grandmother chairs and thought they were awesome. I'd heard of them but not come across them. The chairs are different sizes, with the tall one being the Grandfather chair meant for a male, hence a higher back & a slightly more gruff look. The more delicate one is for females. THIS. This is my baby. 1930's Art Deco credenza. Plan to put my Only Fools & Horses memorabilia in here, my china etc. It's beautiful.
